EMDR Intensives
EMDR is not just for trauma, it is also used for anxiety, relationship triggers, depression and other issues.
EMDR Intensives are ideal for people who want to accelerate their counseling outcomes by working more intensively on a shorter timeline. Typically we can get you scheduled within a month.
Are you wanting to expedite your counseling results? Perhaps you’ve been attending weekly counseling in the traditional model and not making the progress you’re hoping for, or maybe your schedule doesn’t allow weekly sessions spent on the target you are wanting to process? Would you like to accomplish months worth of EMDR in a few hours or days?
EMDR Intensives are ideal for people who want to accelerate their counseling outcomes by working more intensively on a shorter timeline. Typically we can get you scheduled within a month. Intensives are extremely personalized to your needs and to support your therapy goals as well as your schedule. Imagine multiple sessions compacted into one or two days reducing the need for self care, compartmentalization, grounding and mindfulness between weekly sessions.
Intensive session lengths allow you, the client, to end your session at a much lower level of distress with potentially fewer side effects following your session compared to weeks or months of 55–60 minute counseling appointments. There is also less time spent on treatment interruptions and distractions, (that thing also called LIFE) in-between your weekly scheduled session. With a half or full day dedicated to you and your treatment goals there is ample time to process your trauma and achieve the goal of significantly decreasing your distress.
What to Expect in Your EMDR Intensive
Our EMDR Intensive consists of three parts:
1
-
This is a 90 minute virtual session scheduled with Jessica Zimmerman to discuss treatment goals, negative beliefs, triggers, history, somatic responses and assessing if an EMDR Intensive is the right fit for your expectations.
2
-
There are two choices for processing sessions. A half day runs 9am–12pm while the full day runs from 9am–4pm with an hour break for lunch. Both half and full days allow for self care breaks as needed. Regardless of which session you choose, it always begins with developing your positive resources to increase your feelings of control, calmness, and security which will allow you to dive deeper into the distressing experience of your personal narrative. Typically the first 45–60 min is spent developing these positive coping skills to assist the processing portion later in the session. Once the resources are completed another 20–30 minutes is spent creating a target sequence plan. Essentially this is working backwards from current day stressors and triggers connecting them to earlier, often childhood experiences. We will also identify negative thoughts and feelings associated with these triggers. The last part of the intensive is reprocessing the trauma target, in the half day this typically is the last 1.5–2 hours, in the full day intensive this portion lasts 3.5–4 hours. As you can see the main difference between the half day and full day is the length of time dedicated to reprocessing the trauma. Jessica often integrates sand tray, parts work or Internal Family Systems, movement, expressive arts, mindfulness and polyvagal theory into the reprocessing phases. During the initial assessment consultation we will discuss what length of time is ideal for you considering your experience in psychotherapy, how early the trauma occurred (the earlier the trauma typically the more time you need for reprocessing), and your EMDR Intensive goals. It is advised that you have a weekly maintenance therapist to follow up with after you complete the intensive. A release of information is recommended so we can send a note to your therapist with follow up information.

Please note additional sessions beyond the EMDR Intensive are not included in the intensive fee and Jessica Zimmerman is not accepting any new weekly clients. In complex cases, especially with multiple traumatic events at a young age, additional intensive work is recommended.
-
Intensive EMDR Research is Positive:
Intensive application of trauma-focused therapy seems to be well tolerate in patients with PTSD, enabling faster symptom reduction with similar or even better results while reducing the risk that patients drop out prematurely. Intensive EMDR treatment is feasible and is indicative of reliable improvement in PTSD symptoms in a very short time frame. An intensive program using EMDR Therapy is potentially safe and effective treatment alternative for complex PTSD.
-
The Economy is Compelling:
Even compared to other trauma therapy, the intensive format may decrease treatment time because of time not spent on A) Checking in at the beginning of each session, B) Addressing current crises and concerns, C) Focusing on stabilizing and coping skills that the client won’t need after trauma healing, or D) Assisting the client in regaining composure at the end of each session.
