About Me

I am an associate licensed therapist with 3 years of experience in providing therapeutic support to adolescents and adults. My background in mental health counseling allows me to integrate therapeutic goals seamlessly into the D&D gaming experience, creating a safe and supportive environment for personal growth and self-discovery.

My Journey with Dungeons & Dragons

My love for D&D began 7 years ago, and it has been a cornerstone of my personal and professional life ever since. As a seasoned Dungeon Master, I have led numerous campaigns that blend intricate storytelling, strategic gameplay, and character development. I believe that the immersive world of D&D offers a powerful medium for exploring emotions, building social skills, and fostering creativity.

Therapeutic Integration

In Eldoria Adventures, I utilize D&D as a therapeutic tool to help clients achieve their personal goals. Whether it’s enhancing social interactions, building confidence, or developing problem-solving skills, each session is designed with therapeutic intentions in mind. My approach is client-centered, ensuring that each player feels heard, valued, and empowered throughout their journey.

All the answers you’ll ever need…

  • Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is a collaborative storytelling game that combines elements of role-playing, strategy, and imagination. It’s a game where players create unique characters and embark on epic adventures, navigating a world filled with magic, monsters, and mysteries.

Key Components of Dungeons & Dragons:

    The Dungeon Master (DM):

Role. The DM acts as the storyteller and referee, guiding the narrative, setting the scenes, and controlling the non-player characters (NPCs) and monsters. The DM also interprets the rules and ensures the game runs smoothly.

Creation. The DM crafts the world and storyline, designing quests, challenges, and encounters for the players to experience.

    The Players:

Characters. Each player creates a character, choosing from a variety of races (like elves, dwarves, and humans) and classes (such as wizards, warriors, and rogues). Characters have unique abilities, strengths, and weaknesses.

Role-Playing. Players assume the roles of their characters, making decisions, interacting with the world and NPCs, and working together to overcome challenges.

    The Setting:

Fantasy World. D&D is set in a rich, fantasy world filled with ancient ruins, mystical forests, towering castles, and bustling cities. The setting is often influenced by classic fantasy literature and mythology.

Campaigns and Adventures. The game is organized into campaigns, which are long-term story arcs, and adventures, which are shorter missions or quests. Each campaign can last for several sessions, providing an ongoing narrative for the players.

    Game Mechanics:

Dice Rolling. D&D uses a variety of dice to determine the outcomes of actions, from attacking enemies to navigating social interactions. The most commonly used die is the 20-sided die (d20).

Rules and Strategy. The game has a set of core rules that cover character creation, combat, magic, and more. Players must strategize and use their characters' abilities wisely to succeed.

  • Session 0 is a critical introductory meeting before the actual start of a Dungeons & Dragons adventure This session serves several important purposes to ensure that both new and experienced players are on the same page, feel comfortable, and are ready to dive into the adventure. Here's what typically happens during Session 0:

    Character Creation and Development

Character Building. Players create their characters, choosing races, classes, and backgrounds. This is an opportunity to discuss character motivations, backstories, and how they might fit into the upcoming adventure.

Personalization. Players can collaborate with the Dungeon Master (DM) to customize their characters, ensuring they align with the campaign's setting and tone.

    Game Mechanics Introduction

Rules Overview. The DM provides an overview of the basic rules and mechanics of D&D, ensuring everyone understands how to play. This includes explaining how to roll dice, how combat works, and what role-playing entails.

Practice Rolls. Players practice rolling dice and performing basic actions, helping them become comfortable with the game's mechanics.

    Setting and Storyline Briefing

Adventure Setting. The DM introduces the adventure’s setting, providing background on the world, key locations, and the current situation or conflict.

Storyline Teasers. The DM may give hints about the storyline, key NPCs (Non-Player Characters), and potential plot hooks to spark players' interest and creativity.

    Establishing Expectations

Group Dynamics. Discuss group dynamics, including how characters might know each other, team roles, and how they can work together effectively.

House Rules. The DM explains any house rules or modifications to the standard D&D rules that will be used in the campaign.

Player Expectations. Players and the DM discuss expectations regarding gameplay, attendance, and behavior to ensure a positive and respectful gaming environment.

    Therapeutic Goals (For Therapy Groups)

Goal Setting. For therapy-focused adventure, the DM sets therapeutic goals, such as improving social skills, building confidence, or enhancing problem-solving abilities.

Safe Space Creation. Emphasis on creating a safe and supportive environment where players can express themselves and learn through gameplay.

    Why is Session 0 Important?

Session 0 lays the groundwork for a successful D&D campaign by ensuring all players understand the game, feel connected to their characters, and are excited about the adventure ahead. It helps prevent misunderstandings, aligns everyone’s expectations, and fosters a collaborative and engaging gaming experience.

By addressing these elements, Session 0 sets the stage for an enjoyable and cohesive adventure, making it an indispensable part of the D&D experience.
